Biblical Principles Across the Issues

These six introductory guides explain principles shared by the studies. They do not assess a party, candidate, or proposal.

01Human dignityGenesis 1:27 · James 3:9Read study +

The biblical principle

Genesis describes humanity as made in God's image. James challenges speech that dishonors people made in God's likeness. Human worth calls for serious attention to how people are treated.

Questions for discernment

Whose dignity is affected? How does this proposal treat vulnerable people? What evidence supports the claimed benefits and harms?

Read in context: Genesis 1:26–28; James 3:1–12.

02Truth & integrityProverbs 12:22 · Ephesians 4:25Read study +

The biblical principle

Scripture commends truthful speech and condemns deceit. Evaluating public claims requires honesty from those making them and care from those sharing them.

Questions for discernment

Can the statement be traced to its original source? Is the quotation complete? Do documented actions support the claim? Has a correction been acknowledged?

Read in context: Proverbs 12:17–22; Ephesians 4:17–32.

03Justice & impartialityMicah 6:8 · Deuteronomy 16:19Read study +

The biblical principle

Micah connects justice with mercy and humility before God. Deuteronomy warns against partiality and bribery. These principles guide questions about fairness and the use of public authority.

Questions for discernment

Are the same standards applied consistently? Who benefits and who bears the burden? Are there conflicts of interest or barriers to fair treatment?

Read in context: Micah 6:6–8; Deuteronomy 16:18–20.

04Care for the vulnerableProverbs 31:8–9 · James 1:27Read study +

The biblical principle

Scripture calls for speaking on behalf of those who lack a voice and caring for people in distress. The moral responsibility deserves attention alongside the effectiveness of a proposed response.

Questions for discernment

Does the proposal address a documented need? What outcomes have similar approaches produced? How do families, churches, communities, and public institutions contribute?

Read in context: Proverbs 31:8–9; James 1:19–27.

05Stewardship & responsibilityLuke 16:10 · Proverbs 21:5Read study +

The biblical principle

Faithfulness and diligent planning matter in the management of entrusted resources. Public spending and resource decisions invite questions about accountability, consequences, and long-term obligations.

Questions for discernment

Are costs and funding clearly explained? Who is accountable for results? What responsibilities will future generations inherit?

Read in context: Luke 16:1–13; Proverbs 21:5.

06Peace & public leadership1 Timothy 2:1–2 · Romans 12:18Read study +

The biblical principle

Paul instructs believers to pray for those in authority and to pursue peace where possible. Public engagement can be both principled and respectful.

Questions for discernment

How does this leader respond to disagreement? Does the proposal protect people and support a peaceful community? Have I prayed for wisdom and for those in authority?

Read in context: 1 Timothy 2:1–6; Romans 12:9–21.

02 / SCRIPTURE LENS

Conviction, with
careful reasoning.

Read Scripture in context. Establish what the evidence shows. Explain how the principle applies. Distinguish a moral conviction from a judgment about policy methods.

LIFE

The Sanctity of Human Life and Protection of the Unborn

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How do we protect unborn life and care faithfully for women, mothers, and families?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Human life is sacred because every person is created in the image of God. Unborn children deserve protection, and pregnant women, mothers, and families deserve compassionate, practical care.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Genesis 1:26–27
The creation account describes humanity as made in God’s image. This grounds the foundation’s understanding of human dignity and the sacredness of life.
Psalm 139:13–16
The psalmist praises God’s intimate knowledge of his formation in the womb. Vote by the Word draws from this passage in recognizing unborn life as worthy of protection.
Luke 1:39–45
During Mary’s visit, Elizabeth describes the child in her womb responding with joy. This account informs the foundation’s recognition of life before birth.
Proverbs 31:8–9
Instructions to a king call for speaking on behalf of those unable to speak for themselves and judging fairly. This informs advocacy for vulnerable people.
James 2:15–17
James illustrates the inadequacy of words alone when someone lacks food or clothing. This informs practical support for pregnant women, mothers, and families.

These contextual summaries explain the approved framework’s application. The passages do not directly prescribe modern abortion legislation or resolve every medical or policy circumstance.

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word understands human life as sacred because every person is created in the image of God. Its framework understands unborn human life as worthy of protection, drawing from Scripture’s descriptions of God’s involvement in human formation and recognition of life in the womb.

Genesis 1:26–27 establishes humanity’s God-given dignity. Psalm 139:13–16 describes God’s intimate knowledge of human formation before birth. Luke 1:39–45 describes John the Baptist responding in Elizabeth’s womb.

This framework supports protecting unborn children and providing compassionate, practical care for pregnant women, mothers, and families. It calls for respectful treatment of people affected by abortion, pregnancy loss, and difficult pregnancy circumstances.

Evaluations will distinguish a policy’s position on protecting unborn life from its methods of implementation. Specific provisions, exceptions, medical circumstances, and consequences require careful examination of the actual proposal and relevant evidence.

Read in context (KJV): Genesis 1:26–27 · Psalm 139:13–16 · Luke 1:39–45 · Exodus 20:13 · Proverbs 31:8–9 · James 2:15–17

These passages do not directly describe modern abortion legislation. This foundation explains Vote by the Word’s interpretation and application; specific laws require their own assessment.

Approved assessmentCONFLICTS

Conflicts with the approved framework’s commitment to protecting unborn life.

ALIGNS IN PART

Opposition to some abortions aligns with protecting unborn life, but the platform does not explicitly promise protection throughout pregnancy.

Democratic evaluation: reasoning

Under Vote by the Word’s approved interpretation of Genesis 1:26–27, Psalm 139:13–16, and Luke 1:39–45, the platform’s commitment to abortion access conflicts with its protection-of-unborn-life principle. Its commitments to maternal care and practical family support align with the foundation’s separate responsibility to care for women, mothers, and families.

Republican evaluation: reasoning

The platform’s stated opposition to some abortions aligns in part with protecting unborn life. However, leaving decisions to states does not itself establish what protections will apply, and the platform does not specify protection throughout pregnancy. Its stated support for mothers and prenatal care aligns with the foundation’s care responsibilities.

The document uses “Late Term Abortion” without defining a gestational threshold or exceptions in that passage. This assessment does not supply details the platform does not contain.

What Still Needs Examination

IVF and contraception

Separate evaluation needed. Both platforms support access to IVF and contraception. No rating of those practices is assigned in this entry. Each assessment must examine the actual practices and proposals involved.

Specific abortion proposals: further review needed

For both parties, evaluate gestational limits, exceptions, emergency care, enforcement, and effects on women and unborn children using the actual proposal and relevant evidence. Platform commitments alone do not settle these questions.

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • What protections for unborn children do you support, and what actual proposal documents your position?
  • What gestational limits, exceptions, and enforcement provisions would your proposal include?
  • How would you address emergency care and difficult pregnancy circumstances, with safeguards for women and unborn children?
  • What practical support would you provide for pregnant women, mothers, and families, and how would you evaluate whether it reaches those in need?
  • What do your statements and voting record show about both unborn-life protection and maternal and family support?
  • What specific IVF or contraception practices does your proposal address, and what further evidence is needed to evaluate them?

Check answers against original statements, proposal wording, and records. These questions guide research; they do not assign individual candidate ratings or provide medical advice.

Reflection and Prayer

Am I examining protection for unborn children and practical care for women and families with equal seriousness? How can I act with compassion toward someone affected by abortion, pregnancy loss, or a difficult pregnancy?

What evidence do I still need before judging a proposal? Am I distinguishing a person’s dignity from my assessment of their policy position?

Lord, help us honor the life and dignity of every person. Give us wisdom to examine proposals carefully, courage to protect the vulnerable, and compassion to support pregnant women, mothers, and families. Guide our words and actions toward truth, mercy, and practical care. Amen.

MARRIAGE & FAMILY

The Definition of Marriage

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

What is marriage, and what responsibilities come with its covenant?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Biblical marriage is a covenant union between one man and one woman, joined as one flesh, intended to be faithful and enduring. Marriage carries responsibilities of love and care.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Genesis 2:18–24
The creation account describes the woman as a suitable companion for the man and concludes with the man and his wife becoming one flesh. This grounds the approved foundation’s understanding of marriage.
Matthew 19:3–6
Responding to a question about divorce, Jesus refers to the creation of male and female and the one-flesh union. He teaches that what God has joined together should not be separated.
Ephesians 5:21–33
Within instructions for Christian life, Paul describes marital responsibilities and calls husbands to sacrificial love and care for their wives. Marriage’s covenant includes how spouses treat one another.

These contextual summaries explain Vote by the Word’s approved interpretation. A position on marriage’s definition and a proposal about other family responsibilities require distinct evaluations.

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word understands biblical marriage as a covenant union between one man and one woman, joined together as one flesh, intended to be faithful and enduring.

Genesis 2:24 describes a man leaving his father and mother, cleaving to his wife, and becoming one flesh. In Matthew 19:4–6, Jesus refers to the creation of male and female, repeats this description of marriage, and teaches that what God has joined together should not be separated.

Marriage also carries responsibilities of love and care. Ephesians 5:21–33 places marital responsibilities within Christian life and instructs husbands to love their wives sacrificially.

This foundation will guide evaluations of documented positions concerning the definition of marriage. Other family policies will receive separate evaluations using the Scriptures relevant to those questions.

EvaluationCONFLICTS

Specifically regarding recognition of same-sex marriage under the approved framework.

INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE

The platform alone does not establish alignment on the specific definition of marriage.

Democratic evaluation: reasoning

The platform endorses legislation recognizing same-sex civil marriages. Under Vote by the Word’s approved interpretation of Genesis 2:24 and Matthew 19:4–6, that position conflicts with its male–female definition of marriage. This is an evaluation of that specific position.

The law also addresses interracial marriages and includes religious-liberty protections; those provisions are not the basis for this conflict rating.

Read the Respect for Marriage Act · Public Law 117-228

Republican evaluation: reasoning

Affirming marriage’s sanctity supports the importance of marriage, but does not establish how the platform defines it. We do not assign “Aligns” on the definition question without explicit evidence. Candidate statements and voting records can be evaluated separately.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Whether a candidate explicitly states how they define marriage, rather than relying on general language about its importance.
  • What the actual legislation recognizes or requires, and how each provision relates to the question being evaluated.
  • Whether religious institutions and individuals have documented conscience protections; religious freedom requires its own assessment.
  • What a family-support proposal would do, whom it reaches, and what evidence supports its effects.
  • Whether a candidate’s statements and voting record establish the position attributed to them.

Other family policies remain separate questions. This study does not assign new ratings to child care, parental responsibilities, adoption, divorce policy, or other proposals.

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • How do you define marriage, and where have you clearly documented that position?
  • What marriage-related legislation do you support or oppose, and why?
  • How would your proposals affect churches and religious institutions that hold a biblical definition of marriage?
  • What practical policies do you propose to support families, and how would you assess whether they work?
  • How do your voting record and public statements compare with your current commitments?
  • Can you explain distinct provisions of a proposal rather than treating the whole proposal as a single issue?

Check answers against original statements, legislation, and records. These questions guide research; they do not assign individual candidate ratings.

Reflection and Prayer

Am I considering both marriage’s definition and the responsibilities of faithful love and care? How can I express my convictions with clarity while treating every person with dignity and respect?

What evidence do I need before judging a candidate’s position? Am I distinguishing an explicit statement from a phrase that leaves the definition unclear?

Lord, give us wisdom to understand Your Word and faithfulness to honor the responsibilities of marriage. Help husbands and wives walk in love and care, strengthen families, and guide our examination of public policies. May we speak with truth, humility, and respect. Amen.

GENDER & IDENTITY

Sex, Gender Identity, and the Biblical Understanding of Humanity

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How do we uphold God’s creation of male and female while treating every person with dignity?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Vote by the Word believes that God created humanity as male and female—two genders, according to His creation design. We believe that being male or female is rooted in God’s bodily creation and is not determined by a person’s self-described gender identity.

This conviction is grounded in Genesis 1:27, Genesis 2:18–24, and Jesus’ reference to the creation of male and female in Matthew 19:4–6.

Every person is created in God’s image and must be treated with dignity, respect, and compassion. We express this conviction truthfully and lovingly, without ridicule, harassment, or dehumanization.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Genesis 1:26–28
The creation account describes humanity as made in God’s image and identifies male and female. This grounds both the approved understanding of bodily creation and the dignity of every person.
Genesis 2:18–24
The account describes the creation of woman as a suitable companion for man and their one-flesh union. The foundation draws from this account in its understanding of male and female.
Matthew 19:4–6
Jesus refers to the creation of male and female while answering a question about divorce. This reference informs the approved framework; its immediate setting is teaching on marriage.
Psalm 139:13–16
The psalmist praises God’s intimate knowledge of his formation. This informs reverence for human life and care in how we speak about the people affected by policy decisions.
James 3:9–10
James challenges the contradiction of blessing God while cursing people made in His likeness. Conviction must not become ridicule, harassment, or dehumanization.
Ephesians 4:15
Within teaching about the church’s growth and maturity in Christ, Paul joins truth with love. The foundation applies this principle to the manner in which beliefs are expressed.

These contextual summaries explain Vote by the Word’s interpretation. These passages do not directly use the modern term “gender identity.” Differences in physical development do not change Vote by the Word’s belief that God created humanity as male and female. Individual circumstances should be approached with care and compassion.

Vote by the Word believes that God created humanity in His image as male and female—two genders, according to His creation design. Its framework understands being male or female as rooted in God’s bodily creation and not determined by a person’s self-described gender identity.

This interpretation draws primarily from Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:18–24. Jesus also refers to the creation of male and female in Matthew 19:4–6, within His teaching on marriage.

Every person bears God-given dignity and should be treated with respect and compassion. Biblical conviction should be expressed truthfully and lovingly, without ridicule, harassment, or dehumanization.

1. Understanding of sex and gender identity

The platform positions below are being evaluated against Vote by the Word’s belief that God created humanity as male and female. Describing a party’s position does not adopt that position as the website’s belief.

Keep the assessments distinct. “Conflicts in part” concerns the identified transition position. “Aligns in direction” is an inference from stated policy commitments. Protection from violence and bullying is assessed separately; policy implementation requires its own evidence.

Support for gender transition conflicts with the approved framework’s understanding of bodily sex. Protections against violence and bullying are assessed separately.

ALIGNS IN DIRECTION

These positions are consistent in direction with the framework’s emphasis on bodily sex. This is an inference from policy commitments, not an explicit adoption of the biblical framework.

Democratic evaluation: reasoning

Under Vote by the Word’s approved interpretation of Genesis 1:27 and Genesis 2:18–24, support for gender transition conflicts with its understanding of male and female as rooted in bodily creation. This assessment concerns that specific position. The platform’s commitments to preventing bullying and violence align with the framework’s requirement to treat every person with dignity and compassion. The details of nondiscrimination legislation require separate review.

Republican evaluation: reasoning

The platform’s opposition to gender transition in publicly funded schools and its sex-based approach to women’s sports are consistent in direction with Vote by the Word’s approved foundation. This is an inference from its policy commitments; the platform does not explicitly adopt the website’s biblical explanation. Funding restrictions and implementation details require further evaluation, including their effects on people’s dignity and well-being.

2. Protection from violence and bullying

ALIGNS · DOCUMENTED DEMOCRATIC COMMITMENT

The Democratic platform commits to protecting LGBTQI+ children from bullying and to ending violence against transgender Americans (printed page 57). Those specific goals align with the approved requirement to treat every person with dignity and compassion. This assessment does not approve every policy grouped within the platform’s LGBTQI+ section.

The Republican commitments cited above concern schools, sports, and funding. No separate rating of a transgender-specific anti-bullying or anti-violence commitment is assigned in this comparison. That is a limit of this assessment, not a finding that the party supports mistreatment.

Biblical standard: James 3:9–10 · Ephesians 4:15. Every assessment must preserve the dignity of the people affected.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Religious Freedom and Freedom of Conscience

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

Can we worship, share our faith, and follow our conscience without coercion?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Allegiance to God is the believer’s highest responsibility. We support freedom to worship, teach, share faith peacefully, and live according to conscience, while opposing compelled religious participation and supporting fair treatment across beliefs.

Key Scripture in Context

Daniel 3:13–18
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refuse the king’s demand to worship a golden image, even under threat of death. Their response illustrates faithfulness when state commands conflict with worship of God.
Daniel 6:6–10
After a decree restricts petitions to anyone but the king, Daniel continues praying to God. The account illustrates steadfast worship under government pressure.
1 Peter 3:15–16
Peter instructs believers to explain their hope with meekness and respect, maintaining a good conscience. This informs peaceful witness and the manner in which convictions are expressed.
Matthew 22:37–39

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word believes that allegiance to God is the believer’s highest responsibility. Scripture calls believers to worship God, teach His Word, share the gospel, and live according to their faith. When human authorities require disobedience to God, believers must obey God rather than men.

Acts 5:27–29 records the apostles’ refusal to stop teaching in Jesus’ name. Daniel 3 and Daniel 6 illustrate faithfulness to God when government commands conflict with worship and obedience to Him.

Vote by the Word supports freedom to worship, assemble, teach, share religious beliefs peacefully, and practice faith without unjust government interference. We also support protection against coercion to profess a faith or participate in worship. Religious freedom protects people of different faiths and people who profess no faith; that protection does not mean that Vote by the Word regards all beliefs as equally true.

Our framework understands faith as a response to God that cannot be produced by government compulsion. Jesus called people to follow Him, and the apostles instructed believers to explain their hope with meekness and respect. These passages inform our support for peaceful witness and freedom of conscience, rather than prescribing a complete modern legal system.

Religious freedom also carries responsibilities. Scripture teaches love of neighbor, impartial treatment, and respect for civil authority when obedience does not conflict with God’s commands. Claims of religious freedom should receive careful consideration alongside the rights, dignity, and safety of others.

Specific proposals concerning worship, religious expression, conscience protections, religious institutions, and government involvement in religion will receive separate evaluations. We will examine their wording, whom they protect, whether protections apply fairly, and their consequences.

1. Worship and religious expressionCommits to protecting everyone’s free exercise of religion and increasing security at houses of worship.Supports worship and religious practice in everyday life, plus students’ prayer and Bible reading in school.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose. School policies need review to distinguish voluntary expression from government coercion.

2. Conscience protectionsPromises to honor religious freedom alongside other civil rights; specific accommodations need examination.Explicitly supports acting according to deeply held religious beliefs beyond worship settings.SEPARATE ASSESSMENTS

Democratic: Requires wisdom; specific protections need evidence. Republican: Aligns in purpose; exemptions and effects on others require review.

3. Religious institutionsRecognizes faith communities’ service and government partnerships with religious organizations.Broadly supports religious liberty, without detailing institutional autonomy protections in its religious-liberty section.REQUIRES WISDOM

Both require wisdom. Neither broad statement establishes how every church, school, ministry, or charity would be protected.

4. Equal protection and government coercionSupports religious exercise for everyone and separation of church and state.Respects Americans’ beliefs across faiths and proposes a task force against anti-Christian discrimination.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose within the commitments stated. Fair implementation and protection against coerced religious participation require review.

Democratic explanation

The platform’s commitments to worship, protection against religious hate, and fair treatment across beliefs align in purpose with the approved foundation. Its support for the Equality Act makes examination of religious accommodations especially relevant. That commitment alone does not establish how a particular proposal would affect conscience or institutional autonomy; the actual legislative language requires review.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Does the proposal protect peaceful worship, teaching, assembly, and religious expression?
  • Does it protect voluntary faith and guard against compelled religious participation?
  • What conscience accommodations exist, and how do they affect other people’s rights and access to services?
  • Can religious institutions carry out their missions, and what conditions accompany government funding?
  • Are protections applied fairly across beliefs?
  • Are claimed protections documented, or should they be marked “Insufficient evidence”?

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • How would you protect peaceful worship, religious teaching, assembly, and expression in everyday life?
  • How would your proposals protect voluntary prayer and religious expression while preventing government-compelled participation?
  • What conscience accommodations do you support, and how would you address their effects on other people’s rights and access to services?
  • How would churches, ministries, religious schools, and charities retain the ability to carry out their religious missions?
  • Would your protections apply fairly to Christians, people of other faiths, and people who profess no faith?
  • What safeguards would prevent a discrimination investigation from becoming a tool of favoritism or retaliation?
  • Where do your legislative proposals, public statements, and voting record document these commitments?

Reflection and Prayer

Am I willing to practice and share my faith with courage, meekness, and respect? How can I uphold my convictions while treating neighbors of different beliefs with dignity?

Would I support protection against compelled worship for someone whose beliefs differ from mine? What evidence do I need before concluding that a proposal protects conscience fairly?

Lord, strengthen our faithfulness to You and give us courage to worship and share Your Word. Help us speak with meekness and respect, love our neighbors, and examine public proposals with wisdom. Guide those in authority to protect freedom of conscience and administer justice impartially. Amen.

GOVERNMENT INTEGRITY

Government Integrity, Truthfulness, and Accountability

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

Who holds leaders accountable when they misuse authority?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Everyone entrusted with public authority should govern honestly, administer justice impartially, steward public resources faithfully, and be accountable for how they use that authority.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Exodus 18:21
In Moses’ appointment of leaders to help judge the people, trustworthy character and rejection of dishonest gain are central qualifications.
2 Chronicles 19:6–7
Jehoshaphat charges appointed judges to judge faithfully, rejecting injustice, partiality, and bribery.
Proverbs 18:13, 17
Wisdom calls for hearing the matter and examining competing accounts before reaching a conclusion.

These contextual summaries inform the approved foundation below; they do not prescribe every modern ethics or oversight rule.

Read the Full Approved Biblical Foundation

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word believes that public authority carries a responsibility to serve with honesty, justice, and accountability. Romans 13:1–7 describes government’s responsibility to serve the public good and restrain wrongdoing. Holding office does not place a leader above moral responsibility.

Scripture identifies trustworthy character as essential to leadership. Exodus 18:21 describes leaders who fear God, are truthful, and hate covetousness. Proverbs 29:4 contrasts leadership that establishes justice with conduct that undermines a nation.

Vote by the Word opposes bribery, corruption, favoritism, and the misuse of public office for personal gain. Deuteronomy 16:19–20 warns that bribes distort judgment and commands the pursuit of justice. Public decisions should receive impartial evaluation regardless of a leader’s party, wealth, influence, or personal connections.

Truthfulness is also a biblical responsibility. Proverbs 12:22 condemns lying, and Proverbs 18:13, 17 calls for careful examination before reaching conclusions. Claims about misconduct should be assessed using credible evidence, with a fair opportunity to respond. An accusation, investigation, or political disagreement does not by itself establish guilt.

Public resources should be administered faithfully. Luke 16:10–12 teaches faithfulness in matters entrusted to a person; this principle informs our evaluation of public spending, conflicts of interest, and stewardship. Transparency and independent oversight can help establish whether officials are fulfilling those responsibilities.

Accountability should apply consistently to allies and opponents. Vote by the Word supports fair processes for investigating misconduct, correcting abuses, and holding officials responsible when wrongdoing is established. Proverbs 28:13 connects acknowledging wrongdoing with turning away from it.

These principles will guide separate evaluations of proposals concerning ethics, conflicts of interest, transparency, public spending, and oversight. A promise to oppose corruption does not, by itself, demonstrate integrity. Specific rules and documented conduct require examination.

Accountability for Public Authority

Vote by the Word believes that every person holding elected office or serving in a government position should be held accountable for how they exercise the authority entrusted to them. Public service carries a responsibility to govern honestly, administer justice impartially, steward public resources faithfully, and uphold laws consistent with God’s Word.

Scripture teaches that authority carries responsibility before God. Romans 13:1–7 describes government’s responsibility to serve the public good. Second Chronicles 19:6–7 instructs judges to exercise judgment without injustice, partiality, or bribery. Luke 12:48 teaches that greater responsibility accompanies greater trust.

No office, title, political affiliation, or personal relationship should shield someone from appropriate scrutiny. Accountability should apply consistently to elected officials, appointed leaders, and government employees, according to their responsibilities.

Allegations should be examined through credible evidence, impartial investigation, and fair procedures. When wrongdoing is established, accountability should include appropriate consequences, correction of abuses, and measures to prevent their recurrence. Political disagreement alone does not establish misconduct.

Four Separate Approved Platform Assessments

Aligns in purpose means the documented proposal supports a biblical goal. It does not verify a party’s conduct or establish that its methods will work.

2. Truthfulness and transparencyProposes donor disclosure and disclosure of at least ten years of federal candidates’ tax returns.Promises to declassify government records.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with transparency. Disclosure scope and safeguards require wisdom. These commitments do not establish truthfulness.

3. Accountability and impartial oversightProposes a federal ethics commission to strengthen governance and disclosure laws.Promises accountability for officials who misuse government power against political opponents.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with accountability. Independence, fair procedures, and equal treatment require further evidence.

4. Stewardship of public resourcesSupports merit-based federal contracting and preventing political appointees from interfering in grantmaking.Promises to reduce wasteful federal spending.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with stewardship. Procurement controls, spending decisions, and demonstrated results require review.

Democratic explanation

The platform’s proposed ethics rules, disclosures, and contracting safeguards align in purpose with resisting improper influence and administering public resources faithfully. The ethics commission’s independence, enforcement authority, and consistent application require examination. Disclosure proposals also need review of their scope and effects.

Republican explanation

The platform’s commitments to addressing corruption, exposing government records, and reducing waste align in purpose with accountability and stewardship. Its focus on misuse of power against political opponents requires examination of whether safeguards apply equally to allies and opponents. Allegations in the platform are not proof of misconduct.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Does the proposal hold all public officials accountable for their use of authority, with consistent standards and fair procedures?
  • Do ethics rules address gifts, financial interests, personal enrichment, and conflicts of interest?
  • Are disclosures meaningful, accurate, and accessible?
  • Can oversight bodies investigate independently of the officials they oversee?
  • Do investigations provide fair procedures and a meaningful opportunity to respond?
  • Are the same standards applied to political allies and opponents?
  • Do contracting and grant decisions resist favoritism?
  • Are spending reductions supported by evidence of waste, with their consequences examined?
  • Are inaccurate public statements corrected when established?

Truthfulness needs its own evidence. A transparency proposal cannot establish that a party’s statements are accurate, just as an anti-corruption promise cannot establish honest conduct. Missing safeguards should be marked “Insufficient evidence,” while documented policy tradeoffs should be marked “Requires wisdom.”

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • Do you support the same accountability standards for political allies and opponents?
  • What documented actions support your claims about integrity?
  • Would your proposed ethics and oversight safeguards apply to you?
  • How would you protect independent investigations and a fair opportunity to respond?

The biblical foundation and accountability statement were approved October 7, 2026, by Karen J. Smith. The four platform assessments, explanations, and further-review approach were also approved October 7, 2026. JUSTICE & LAW

Equal Justice, Due Process, and Accountability

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How do we protect communities while ensuring that justice is truthful, impartial, and accountable?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Justice requires truthful judgment, impartial treatment, and accountability. Government should restrain wrongdoing and protect people while preserving fair legal processes and safeguards against abuse of authority.

Key Scripture in Context

Deuteronomy 16:18–20
Instructions for Israel’s judges prohibit distorted judgment, partiality, and bribery. They establish the foundation’s standard of impartial justice.
Leviticus 19:15
The instruction forbids favoritism toward either the poor or the powerful. A person’s standing should not determine how their case is judged.
Proverbs 18:17
A first account can appear persuasive until it is examined. This informs careful consideration of competing evidence before reaching a conclusion.
Deuteronomy 19:15–19
Instructions concerning witnesses require corroboration and diligent inquiry into false accusations. The framework draws from these principles when examining allegations and fair procedures.
Romans 13:1–4
Paul describes civil authority’s responsibility to serve the good and restrain wrongdoing. That responsibility informs public safety without making every government action just.
Micah 6:8 and Isaiah 1:17
Micah joins justice with mercy and humility; Isaiah calls for correcting oppression and defending vulnerable people. Justice includes attention to those harmed or overlooked.

These contextual summaries inform the approved foundation. Ancient judicial instructions do not prescribe every feature of modern law; due process is evaluated in light of their principles of evidence and fairness.

IMMIGRATION

The Treatment of Immigrants, Border Security, and Fair Legal Processes

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How do we uphold lawful immigration and secure borders while treating every person justly?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Vote by the Word supports lawful immigration and does not support illegal immigration. Respect for governing authorities and laws consistent with God’s Word belongs alongside dignity, humanity, and fair treatment for every person—including someone who has violated immigration law.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Genesis 1:26–27
The creation account establishes humanity’s God-given dignity. The foundation distinguishes a person’s legal status from their human worth.
Leviticus 19:33–34
Israel is instructed not to mistreat the stranger living among them, but to love that person as themselves. This informs humane treatment of foreigners.
Deuteronomy 10:17–19 and Exodus 22:21
These passages describe God’s impartial care and instruct Israel to love the stranger and reject oppression, recalling Israel’s experience in Egypt.
Romans 13:1–7 and 1 Peter 2:13–17
These instructions call believers to respect governing authorities and recognize their role in maintaining order. They inform support for lawful entry and orderly border administration.
Acts 5:27–29
The apostles affirm obedience to God when ordered to stop teaching in Jesus’ name. The foundation recognizes that human authority does not override obedience to God.
Deuteronomy 16:19–20
Instructions to judges prohibit partiality and bribery and call for pursuing justice. This informs fair procedures and accountability in immigration enforcement.

These contextual summaries inform the approved foundation. Ancient references to strangers do not map exactly onto modern immigration categories, and these passages do not prescribe a complete border or asylum system.

Read the Full Approved Biblical Foundation

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word understands every person, including immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, as bearing God-given dignity. Scripture calls for love toward the stranger and condemns oppression, mistreatment, and partiality.

Leviticus 19:33–34, Deuteronomy 10:17–19, and Exodus 22:21 establish responsibilities of care and fair treatment toward foreigners living among God’s people.

Romans 13:1–4 describes civil authority’s responsibility to maintain order and restrain wrongdoing. This framework recognizes a legitimate role for immigration laws and border administration while requiring government actions to be evaluated for justice, truthfulness, and humane treatment.

Immigration policies should distinguish an individual’s legal status from their human worth. Enforcement should be assessed alongside fair legal processes, protection of vulnerable people, family consequences, and accountability for abuse.

Specific proposals concerning border security, asylum, deportation, legal immigration, and citizenship will receive separate evaluations based on their wording, evidence, safeguards, and consequences.

Respect for Lawful Immigration and Fair Treatment

Vote by the Word supports lawful immigration and does not support illegal immigration. We believe that respect for governing authorities and obedience to laws consistent with God’s Word are biblical responsibilities. These principles support orderly borders, lawful entry, and compliance with immigration laws.

At the same time, every person—including someone who has violated immigration law—must be treated with dignity, humanity, and fairness. Enforcement should respect due process, protect against abuse, and give careful consideration to children and other vulnerable people.

Our evaluations will consider both whether a proposal upholds lawful immigration and whether it treats people justly. Specific border, asylum, detention, and deportation policies require examination of their actual rules and consequences. Seeking asylum through a legally available process should not automatically be equated with illegal immigration.

Read in context (KJV): Genesis 1:26–27 · Leviticus 19:33–34 · Deuteronomy 10:17–19 · Exodus 22:21 · Romans 13:1–7 · 1 Peter 2:13–17 · Acts 5:29 · Deuteronomy 16:19–20 · Matthew 25:35

These passages do not prescribe a modern immigration system. Ancient references to strangers and resident foreigners do not map exactly onto today’s legal categories. Neither compassion nor respect for authority, by itself, settles every policy question.

Four Separate Approved Platform Assessments

Keep the questions distinct. “Aligns in purpose” evaluates a stated commitment, not verified results. “Requires wisdom” identifies questions about policy application. Missing safeguards require evidence; a platform promise does not establish fair implementation.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Whether proposals uphold lawful entry, orderly borders, and compliance with immigration laws.
  • Whether enforcement treats every person with dignity and fairness, including people who have violated immigration law.
  • Whether policies distinguish legally available asylum processes from illegal immigration.
  • Whether people have a meaningful opportunity to establish their circumstances and challenge errors.
  • Whether children’s safety and family relationships are verified before return.
  • Whether enforcement distinguishes suspicion from established facts.
  • Whether asylum restrictions preserve meaningful protection for people fleeing persecution.
  • Whether admissions rules balance legitimate public interests with dignity and family consequences.

CARE FOR THE POOR

Poverty, Practical Assistance, and Economic Opportunity

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How can we meet genuine needs while encouraging work, family provision, and generosity?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Care for people in poverty is a biblical responsibility. Scripture also teaches honest work, provision for one’s household, and generosity toward others. We support practical help and opportunity, distinguishing deliberate unwillingness to work from inability or barriers to employment.

Isaiah 58:6–10 and James 2:14–17
Isaiah connects faithful devotion with resisting oppression and meeting material needs. James challenges words of concern without practical help. Both inform tangible care.
1 Thessalonians 4:11–12
Paul encourages believers to lead a quiet life, attend to their responsibilities, and work with their own hands. This informs honest labor and responsible provision.
2 Thessalonians 3:10–12
Paul addresses people living disorderly lives and refusing to work, urging them to work quietly and eat their own bread. The warning concerns unwillingness to work; the framework distinguishes it from inability or unavailable employment.
1 Timothy 5:8
Within instructions about the care of widows and family responsibilities, Paul emphasizes provision for one’s household. This informs family care alongside protection for people who lack adequate support.
Ephesians 4:28

James 5:1–6
James condemns wealthy people who withhold wages and oppress others. Poverty policy must consider exploitation and fair treatment as well as individual responsibility.

Second Thessalonians 3:10–12 challenges deliberate unwillingness to work. First Timothy 5:8 emphasizes responsibility for one’s household, and Ephesians 4:28 connects honest labor with generosity toward people in need.

This framework supports immediate assistance for genuine needs and opportunities for people to support themselves and their families. It distinguishes unwillingness to work from inability to work or lack of available employment. Disability, illness, caregiving responsibilities, and other circumstances require careful consideration.

Deuteronomy 15:7–11, Isaiah 58:6–10, and James 2:14–17 call for tangible care. James 5:1–6 condemns exploitation and withheld wages. Neither poverty nor wealth should determine a person’s worth or their right to impartial treatment.

Individuals, families, churches, communities, businesses, and government policies can contribute to addressing poverty. Specific proposals will be evaluated for whether they meet genuine needs, encourage honest work and household provision, protect those unable to support themselves, expand opportunity, and steward resources responsibly.

Read in context (KJV): Deuteronomy 15:7–11 · Proverbs 14:31 · Isaiah 58:6–10 · James 2:14–17 · Leviticus 19:9–10 · James 5:1–6 · Leviticus 19:15 · 1 Thessalonians 4:11–12 · 2 Thessalonians 3:10–12 · 1 Timothy 5:8 · Ephesians 4:28

Scripture establishes the responsibility to care; it does not prescribe every modern welfare, tax, or employment policy. A program’s compassionate purpose and demonstrated results receive separate assessments.

Four Separate Approved Platform Assessments

Purpose and results are separate. “Aligns in purpose” evaluates a stated commitment to assistance or opportunity. It does not establish whether a program reaches those in need, enables work, protects vulnerable people, or uses resources effectively.

Four separate care for the poor assessments of the 2024 national party platforms
AreaDemocratic platform · 2024Republican platform · 2024Approved assessment
1. Immediate assistanceSupports food assistance and restoring expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit benefits.Expresses commitments to addressing homelessness compassionately and sheltering and treating homeless veterans.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose within the commitments documented. Their scope and methods differ.

2. Work and opportunitySupports higher minimum wages, labor protections, and enforcement against wage theft.Emphasizes job creation, domestic manufacturing, and economic growth.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with economic opportunity. The Democratic commitment against wage theft also aligns with opposing exploitation.

3. HousingSupports rental assistance and increased affordable housing supply.Supports increased construction, homeownership incentives, and assistance for first-time buyers.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with housing access. Affordability and reach require further review.

4. Health careSupports Medicaid expansion and affordable coverage.Supports affordable care through transparency, competition, and expanded options.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with access to care. Effects on low-income people require further review.

Democratic explanation

The platform’s commitments to material assistance, fair pay, housing, and health coverage align in purpose with Vote by the Word’s biblical responsibility to care for people in poverty. Specific programs require evaluation of eligibility, accessibility, costs, effectiveness, and unintended consequences.

Republican explanation

The platform’s commitments to opportunity, affordability, and assistance for homeless people and veterans align in purpose with the approved foundation. Broad economic growth promises do not, by themselves, establish that people in poverty will receive adequate help. Specific proposals require evidence about who benefits and who remains underserved.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Whether assistance reaches people facing hunger, illness, disability, or unstable housing.
  • Does the proposal encourage and enable work for people who can work?
  • Does it support household provision while protecting people who cannot reasonably support themselves?
  • Does it distinguish deliberate refusal to work from barriers such as unavailable jobs, disability, or caregiving?
  • Whether wage and employment policies protect workers while supporting sustainable opportunities.
  • Whether housing and health proposals are accessible to the poorest households.
  • Whether spending, tax changes, and administrative costs represent responsible stewardship.

A policy’s work requirement would still need examination of its actual rules and consequences; the presence of a requirement alone would not establish biblical alignment.

A goal can align in purpose while its policy methods require wisdom. Claims about results should be marked “Insufficient evidence” when they have not been verified.

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • How would your proposals meet immediate needs for food, housing, and health care?
  • How would you encourage and enable honest work for people who can work?
  • What safeguards would distinguish deliberate refusal to work from disability, illness, caregiving responsibilities, or unavailable jobs?
  • How would your proposals support household provision while protecting people unable to support themselves?
  • What measures would prevent exploitation, withheld wages, and unfair treatment of workers?
  • How would you determine whether assistance and economic opportunities actually reach the poorest households?
  • What evidence, spending controls, and oversight would establish responsible stewardship and effective results?

Check answers against original statements, proposal wording, and evidence. A work requirement alone does not establish biblical alignment, and a compassionate goal alone does not establish successful results. These questions guide research; they do not assign individual candidate ratings.

Reflection and Prayer

Am I responding to genuine need with practical compassion while taking work, family provision, and generosity seriously? Am I making assumptions about someone’s willingness to work without understanding their circumstances?

How can I contribute through my family, church, community, or work? What evidence do I need before concluding that a public proposal helps those it intends to serve?

Lord, give us generous hearts and wisdom to meet genuine needs. Help us work honestly, provide faithfully for our households, and share with others. Protect people facing hardship and exploitation, and guide those shaping public policies to act with justice, compassion, and responsible stewardship. Amen.

NATIONAL SECURITY

National Security, Protection, and the Pursuit of Peace

APPROVED OCTOBER 7, 2026

THE QUESTION

How do we protect our nation while pursuing peace and exercising power responsibly?

What Vote by the Word Believes

Government has a responsibility to protect people and restrain wrongdoing. National security should pursue peace, protect vulnerable people, and exercise power with truthful judgment, wisdom, accountability, and responsible stewardship.

Key Scripture in Context

Select a Scripture reference to read the full passage in the King James Version on Bible Gateway. Opens in a new tab.

Romans 13:1–7
Paul describes civil authority’s responsibility to serve the good and restrain wrongdoing. This informs government’s protective role without declaring every use of force righteous.
Matthew 5:9
Within the Beatitudes, Jesus honors peacemakers. The foundation draws from this call in supporting efforts to prevent conflict and pursue peace.
Romans 12:18
Within instructions for Christian conduct, Paul urges peaceful relationships as far as possible. Its application to diplomacy recognizes that government and individuals have distinct responsibilities.
Proverbs 6:16–19
This wisdom passage condemns lying, false witness, and shedding innocent blood. It informs scrutiny of claims about threats and the protection of people affected by conflict.
Proverbs 11:14 and 15:22
These sayings emphasize the value of counsel in sound decisions. The framework applies this wisdom to examining military objectives, alternative responses, and consequences.
Psalm 82:3–4
In a rebuke concerning unjust judgment, the psalm calls for defending the weak and rescuing those in need. This informs attention to vulnerable people affected by security decisions.
Micah 6:8
Micah calls for justice, mercy, and humility before God. These responsibilities inform how authority is exercised, including in national security.

These contextual summaries inform the approved foundation. They do not prescribe a complete modern defense strategy, establish that every military action is justified, or verify a policy’s results.

Approved biblical foundation

Vote by the Word recognizes government’s responsibility to maintain order, restrain wrongdoing, and protect people from violence. Romans 13:1–7 describes civil authority as accountable for its exercise of power. National security should serve the protection of people and the administration of justice.

Scripture also calls believers to pursue peace. Matthew 5:9 honors peacemakers, and Romans 12:18 instructs believers to live peaceably with others as far as possible. These passages inform our support for diplomacy, efforts to prevent conflict, and the peaceful resolution of disputes, while recognizing that governments have responsibilities distinct from those of individuals.

The Bible calls for justice, truthful judgment, and protection of vulnerable people. National security decisions should consider the safety of civilians, service members, and others affected by conflict. Proverbs 6:16–19 condemns lying and the shedding of innocent blood; these principles inform scrutiny of both the reasons for military action and its conduct.

Power should be exercised with wisdom, counsel, and accountability. Proverbs 11:14 and 15:22 emphasize the value of counsel. Claims about threats, military objectives, and likely consequences should be examined carefully rather than accepted solely because they come from a political leader or party.

Vote by the Word supports responsible protection against credible threats while evaluating the necessity, scope, and consequences of proposed actions. Military readiness, diplomacy, alliances, intelligence, and cybersecurity can contribute to national security; their specific use requires discernment.

These Scriptures do not prescribe a complete modern defense strategy or make every military action righteous. Specific proposals will receive separate evaluations based on their documented purpose, evidence, safeguards, stewardship of resources, and consequences.

Border security has its own immigration assessment. This section focuses on defense and external threats, with reference to immigration where the issues overlap.

Four Separate Approved Platform Assessments

Evaluate purpose, methods, and evidence separately. “Aligns in purpose” evaluates a stated commitment to protection, restraint, or peace. It does not establish that a particular operation is justified or effective. Missing safeguards require evidence; documented policy tradeoffs require wisdom.

Four national security assessments of the 2024 national party platforms
AreaDemocratic platform · 2024Republican platform · 2024Approved assessment
1. Defense and readinessSupports advanced weapons, training, nuclear deterrence, and military investment.Supports military modernization, missile defense, and domestic defense production.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with protecting people against credible threats. Spending, effectiveness, and escalation risks require review.

2. Diplomacy and conflict preventionEmphasizes diplomacy, alliances, and military force as a last resort.Emphasizes peace through strength, stronger alliances, and diplomatic capabilities.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with pursuing peace and preventing aggression. Particular strategies require wisdom.

3. Use of force and civilian protectionExpressly supports restraint, human rights, and preventing civilian harm.Calls for using military strength sparingly when national interests are threatened; those passages provide less detail on civilian safeguards.SEPARATE ASSESSMENTS

Democratic: Aligns in purpose with stated safeguards. Republican: Aligns in purpose with restraint; civilian safeguards need further evidence. Individual military actions require wisdom for both.

4. Intelligence, cybersecurity, and civil libertiesSupports stronger intelligence capacity against cyber threats and rules for emerging technologies.Supports protecting critical infrastructure and raising cybersecurity standards.ALIGNS IN PURPOSE

Both align in purpose with protection against cyber threats. Surveillance powers, privacy safeguards, and oversight require separate review.

Democratic explanation

The platform’s stated combination of preparedness, diplomacy, restraint, and civilian protection aligns in purpose with the foundation. Those commitments do not establish that every operation, weapons transfer, or intelligence activity meets that standard. Each requires evidence about necessity, safeguards, and consequences.

Republican explanation

The platform’s stated goals of defense, deterrence, alliances, and restrained force align in purpose with protection and peace. Its proposed methods require examination of credible threats, civilian safeguards, escalation risks, and accountability. Broad security commitments alone do not establish those protections.

What Still Needs Examination

  • Is the threat supported by credible evidence?
  • Have reasonable diplomatic options been considered?
  • Are military objectives clear, necessary, and limited?
  • What safeguards protect civilians and service members?
  • Could the action escalate conflict or create greater harm?
  • Are spending and procurement responsible and accountable?
  • Do intelligence and cybersecurity measures include privacy protections and independent oversight?

Missing safeguards should be marked “Insufficient evidence”; difficult choices about documented methods should be marked “Requires wisdom.” A platform’s silence does not, by itself, establish opposition to a biblical principle.

Questions to Ask Your Candidates

  • What credible evidence supports the threats your proposals are intended to address?
  • How would you balance defense readiness with diplomacy and reasonable efforts to prevent conflict?
  • What objectives and limits would guide a decision to use military force?
  • What safeguards would protect civilians and service members, and how would harm or misconduct be investigated?
  • How would you assess escalation risks, long-term consequences, and alternatives before acting?
  • What spending and procurement controls would support effective defense and responsible stewardship?
  • How would intelligence and cybersecurity measures protect privacy and fair treatment while allowing independent oversight?

Check answers against original statements, proposal wording, and documented records. Claims about past success or future results require verification. These questions guide research; they do not assign individual candidate ratings.

Reflection and Prayer

Am I taking both protection and the pursuit of peace seriously? Have I considered the effects of a proposal on civilians, service members, families, and vulnerable people?

Would I require the same evidence and accountability from a leader I support as from one I oppose? What counsel, safeguards, and consequences still need examination before I reach a conclusion?

Lord, give those entrusted with our nation’s security wisdom, truthful judgment, and humility. Protect service members, civilians, and families affected by conflict. Help our leaders pursue peace, restrain wrongdoing, and exercise power with justice and accountability. Guide us to examine proposals carefully and respond with compassion. Amen.

Our Mission

Vote by the Word equips believers, pastors, families, and study groups to examine public issues through the Holy Bible and approach voting with prayerful, informed discernment.

Our biblical foundations and assessments express Vote by the Word’s beliefs and editorial judgments. They help readers research and reason; they do not replace personal responsibility.

Editorial Responsibility

Karen J. Smith provides editorial approval for the published foundations and assessments. Each study identifies its approval record and sources.

Publication requires an approved biblical foundation, documented positions, an explanation connecting the evidence to the principle, and identification of questions needing further review.

How We Evaluate

  1. Read Scripture in context and state the biblical principle.
  2. Examine official platforms and other original, dated evidence.
  3. Assess specific commitments separately, using the same framework for each party.
  4. Distinguish stated goals, policy methods, documented conduct, and unknowns.
  5. Obtain editorial approval before publishing an assessment or changing a conclusion.

We do not assign blanket party ratings. A national platform assessment does not automatically apply to an individual candidate.

Review and Corrections

When a source changes, a new platform is adopted, or a documented error is identified, the affected assessment should be reexamined before a revised conclusion is published. Updates are editorially reviewed; the website does not automatically track political developments.
